What is a home swap?

A home swap is a mutual exchange of properties between two or more social housing tenants based in the UK.
Before you can swap you will need to approach your landlords and fill out a simple application form to exchange. There are certain requirements that must be met before the exchange can take place.

• You can not swap if you have any rent arrears.
• You can not swap if you have been served an eviction notice.
• The home you wish to swap into can not be too big or small for your families needs.
• If you have a disabled adapted property you will need to find a tenant who qualifies for an adapted home.

How it works?

Join movemesilly.co.uk, add your property advert then browse the other properties listed. Once you find properties your interested in contact the advertising tenant. You can ask for more details and photos of their home and provide details of your home. Even if they are not interested in your home you can multiswap by finding a third party to complete the chain.

Exchange Paperwork

Once you have found a swap your interested in, you then need to view each others homes and the area, once you are all happy with this, then contact your landlords and request to swap. Your landlords will guide you through the very simple process and make a decision within 42 days of you handing in your exchange applications.

The application paperwork asks for the names ages and sex of the people who are moving into the new home and the relationship of them to the tenants whose name is on the rent book. They often ask for a reason for the swap, which can be to move nearer friends, family for health reasons or just a change of scenery. You might be swapping as you need a bigger home and cant find one in your local area.

Moving Home
You will be able to move once both landlords have agreed to the swap, it is up to you to read your gas and electric meters, pay any outstand bills, cover any removal expenses and pay for any decorating to the new home, you will not be able to get any grants to cover this.

What if i want to swap again!
Once you have swapped you can swap again at any time, there is no time limit or a limit to the number of swaps you can make.
